This Magic Quadrant describes the evolution of backup, which incorporates new products, solutions and techniques for protecting, backing up and recovering physical server and virtual server files, applications, system images and remote offices and endpoint devices.

In this research, Gartner narrows it down to the backup and recovery software vendors that have a strong presence in midsize and large organization IT environments. The vendor profile is not product-specific, but rather represents the vendor's overall position in the enterprise backup/recovery software and integrated appliance market.

As stated in the report, “By 2016, 20% of organizations, up from 12% today, will employ only snapshot and replication techniques, abandoning traditional backup/recovery for the majority of their data; by 2017, the number of enterprises using cloud as a backup destination will double, up from 12% today. And by 2019, there will be a 60% increase in the number of large enterprises eliminating tape for operational recovery.”

With a greater number of enterprises moving toward cloud backup, the importance of selecting the right service provider and technology platform will become paramount concerns. Enterprises are advised to base their qualifications on service level requirements including the ability to protect all targeted data sets, provide data recovery performance options, deliver excellent customer service, adhere to compliance mandates, and ensure information security and data sovereignty. The service provider must be able to meet the business requirements of the customer and adapt to their evolving technology needs.
